چکیده

A numerical study has been performed to analyze the wall heat transfer mechanisms during growth of a vapor bubble inside a microchannel. The microchannel is of 200 lm square cross section and a vapor bubble begins to grow at one of the walls, with liquid coming in through the channel inlet. The complete Navier-Stokes equations along with continuity and energy equations are solved using the SIMPLER method. The liquid vapor interface is captured using the level set technique. Experiments have been conducted to validate the numerical model. The bubble growth rate and shapes show good agreement between numerical and experimental results. The numerical results show that the wall heat transfer increases with wall superheat but stays almost unaffected by the liquid flow rate. The liquid vapor surface tension value has little influence on bubble growth and wall heat transfer. However, the bubble with the lowest contact angle resulted in the highest wall heat transfer. Numerical Study of the Effect of Surface Tension on Vapor Bubble Growth during Flow Boiling in Microchannels

Microchannel heat sinks typically consist of parallel channels connected through a common header. During flow boiling random temporal and spatial formation of vapor bubbles may lead to reversed flow in certain channels which causing an early CHF condition. Inside the microchannels the liquid surface tension forces is expected to play an important role and impact the vapor bubble growth and corr...

Subcooled two-phase flow boiling in a microchannel heat sink: comparison of conventional numerical models

Subcooled flow boiling in multi-microchannels can be used as an efficient thermal management approach in compact electrical devices. Highly subcooled flow boiling of HFE 7100 is studied in two microchannel heat sinks to choose a proper numerical model for simulating boiling flows in microchannels. Results of five different numerical models, including Volume of Fluid (VOF), Eulerian boiling, Eul...

This study examines the single-phase and two-phase cooling performance of a hybrid micro-channel/micro-jet impingement cooling scheme using HFE 7100 as working fluid. This scheme consists of supplying coolant from a series of jets that deposit liquid into the micro-channels. A single-phase numerical scheme that utilizes the k–e turbulent model and a method for determining the extent of the lami...

A Saturated-Interface-Volume Phase Change Model for Simulating Flow Boiling

High-fidelity simulation of flow boiling in microchannels remains a challenging problem, but the increasing interest in applications of microscale two-phase transport highlights its importance. In this paper, a volume of fluid (VOF)-based flow boiling model is proposed with features that enable cost-effective simulation of two-phase flow and heat transfer in realistic geometries. The vapor and ...
